Free Seminar Lighting and Design, 16th Feb..

OPAN Cymru Winter Seminar Series · Wednesday 16 February 2011, 12:30 –14.00 (Tea and coffee will be available from 12.30, presentation will begin at 13.00)

Room 120 Vivian Tower, Swansea University. (PLEASE NOTE VENUE CHANGE)

“Lighting and design in the homes of older people and others with sight loss” Anthony Slater, Thomas Pocklington Trust

As people age, they do not see so well. Sight loss affects the everyday lives of some 2 million people in UK and is increasing as the population ages. Pocklington research and development projects have demonstrated that improvements to lighting at home enable people to carry out tasks of daily living more easily and safely. Pocklington has produced guidance on lighting the homes of people with sight loss which addresses both adaptations to existing homes and development of new homes. It also includes advice on other aspects of the visual environment such as use of contrast.

Pocklington Good Practice Guides can be downloaded from www.pocklington-trust.org.uk

The visual environment is only one element in the design of the home. A recent study of guidance on design of homes for people with dementia has identified common themes but also areas of potential conflict with guidance on design for people with sight loss. As sight loss and dementia often coexist, further work is needed to reconcile these issues. Spaces are limited for the free seminar, to ensure a place please contact:
Maria Cheshire-Allen tel: 01792 602048 m.cheshire-allen@swansea.ac.uk

The seminar will take place in room 120 Vivian Tower. See building number 11.2 on the Campus Map. A lift can be found at the main entrance to the building. If you have specific access requirements, please contact Maria Cheshire-Allen prior to the seminar.

Mae colli golwg yn effeithio ar fywyd pob dydd rhyw 2 filiwn o bobl yn y Deyrnas Unedig ac mae’n cynyddu wrth i’r boblogaeth heneiddio. Mae ymchwil a phrosiectau datblygu Pocklington wedi dangos bod gwelliannau i oleuni yn y cartref yn galluogi pobl i wneud tasgau pob dydd yn haws ac yn fwy diogel. Mae Pocklington wedi llunio canllawiau ar oleuni yng nghartrefi pobl sydd wedi colli eu golwg ac mae’r canllawiau hyn yn mynd i’r afael ag addasiadau i dai sy’n bodoli eisoes a datblygu tai newydd. Mae hefyd yn cynnwys cyngor ar agweddau eraill o’r amgylchedd gweledol megis defnyddio cyferbyniad. Gellir lawrlwytho Canllawiau Arferion Da Pocklington o www.pocklington-trust.org.uk Dim ond un elfen o ddylunio’r cartref yw’r amgylchedd gweledol. Mae astudiaeth ddiweddar ar ganllawiau ar ddylunio cartrefi i bobl a chanddynt ddemensia wedi adnabod themâu cyffredin ond hefyd y meysydd o wrthdaro posibl gyda chanllawiau ar ddylunio ar gyfer pobl sydd wedi colli eu golwg. Gan fod colli golwg a demensia yn cydfodoli yn aml, mae angen gwneud rhagor o waith i ddatrys y materion hyn.
